Inspired by the words and wisdom of the inspirational Maya Angelou. Many of us knew Maya’s words way before we came to know much about her. The artists’ sister used to read her books when they were teenagers. She remembers distinctly seeing the title of one of her books “I know when the caged bird sings” and noticing her name – thinking to herself, “ Maya, what a pretty name”.
Years later, in her adults years, she heard her poem “Still I Rise” in the form of a house music track by a UK soulful house singer – Peyton and immediately fell in love with the song. She wanted to learn the lyrics and at that point, had no idea that it was Maya’s Poem.
Years on, that poem has stayed with her. The powerful words have helped her get over some dark times in her life, Courtenay says she’s always thought back to the poem through tough times and it inspired this piece of original abstract art work.
